WHAT: A refreshing halfday at the catarata of Uvita WHERE: Uvita, on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, some ten minutes driving inland. Signs will direct you to the waterfall HOW LONG: As long as you like! HOW MUCH: ₡ 1000,- to get in. If you're on the dirt cheap, you can drive a bit more to the south, find another road and walk next to the river stream upwards, to save yourself $2,-.
Visiting waterfalls is for some kind of reason always fun. Costa Rica has some many of them, so why go to the one in Uvita? Well, if you’re planning to go to Uvita, Ojochal or Dominical, this catarata is a fairly easy one to reach. Many of the waterfalls require long hikes through mountains, but this one is just right here, 10 minutes from the main road and you can go all the way up by car. Easypeasy right?
The water of the waterfall is supercool and refreshing, and that might be just what you need as a relief from the heat in the area. The pool beneath the waterfall is swimmable (quite deep even!), and so is another one a couple of steps further.
For the daredevils, the water has sculpted a slide in the rock itself that makes a fun natural waterslide (climb up via the left side). Although I should add, it is superhigh, so perhaps it’s better if you skip this one. Watching other people taking the leap of faith is pretty breathtaking too. In the same category we find the jumping of the rock on the right side. The water is deep enough to land, but again be extremely careful please and watch some other locos jump first if you want to go yourself. You wouldn’t be the first who’d hurst himself; there are no lifeguards and the slippery rocks can be tricky. So apart from that warning note, have fun, organize a little picknick over there and enjoy a relaxing day in the jungle!
