Snapshots of the cobblestone streets in Cusco, Peru

Arguably Peru’s most beautiful city, Cusco needs to be explored for days while wandering all of its many cobblestoned alleys and plazas. Cusco was a former center of the Inca empire, mixed for centuries with Spanish influences and now a popular stop high up in the Andes for people on their way to Machu Picchu. Allow yourself a couple of days to soak it all up and to adjust yourself to the altitude (with coca leafs!) before visiting Peru’s most visited ruins.

Stroll the bohemian districts of San Blas, visit the Inca ruins of Saqsaywaman on top of the hill, get your sugar rush at the ChocoMuseo, gaze in awe at the herbal remedies and the offerings for sale at the San Pedro Central Market, get acquainted with llamas and condors at Santuario Animal de Cochahuasi, relax during a massage (if you dare, at the square!), take a break at the Plaza de Armas for some people watching, eat a cuy at Nuna Raymi, see the blend in architecture of an Inca temple and the Spanish built cathedral on top of it at Qorikancha, and drink a pisco sour while viewing the city from above at Limbus Resto Bar
