The number one question between all that lounging and hammocking and swimming in those crystal clear waters of Isla Holbox at some point is probably gonna be; “where the hell are we gonna eat?!” Oh, the stress is real with so many choices around.
But let’s not make this more complicated than it has to be … sit back and relax again with that Tecate, Sol or Dos Equis in your hand and swing your sorrows away – here’s my top 3 recommendation on the island for you!
For breakfast (or brunch / lunch)
Le Jardin Panadería
Run by a French guy, the chansons and the croissants de chocolate are never far away at this lush spot. Although it might seem a bit out of town on the map, it’s only a two block walk away from the main square :).
We ordered an omelette with fries, which was huge and a couple of pastries on the side. But I noticed that they have great sandwiches and bagels (with home made bread!) too if you like to bring something along, for your day on the beach or during a hike for example.
The coffee was really in here by the way! A welcome break from all the Nescafe on the island. Aaaand they probably have the best (and cheapest) juices in here. So go check it out! You might end up having breakfast here every morning.
For lunch
Las Panchas
A couple of steps away from the beach, this local favourite is a great break from a tough day of tanning. Recommended to us by our Airbnb host, this spot is also my number one recommendation of all the things we tried out on the island.
It may not look like much on the outside, but if you’re in dire need of some vitamine fish and quick service, Las Panchas really is the place to be. We ordered a big ceviche for $12,- USD and it was enough to keep the two of us energized for the rest of the day.
You can also come here for dinner, but take note that this place only opens til 7pm.
For dinner
MILPA
Romantic night out? Looking for a gastronomical experience? Just want to pamper yourself? Go to MILPA. You’ll most likely have a great evening at the most ambitious restaurant of Holbox -located right around the corner of the main square – especially if you care for neatly dressed up dishes.
The only setback is the service – a bit weird from time to time. Oh and the red wine is icy cold (porque?!). That aside, we really liked the food. Mains are more or less $15,- USD and that seems very reasonable for what you get.
The menu is limited, but that usually is a good sign in my experience. We ordered the drunken pulpo and the duck (you wouldn’t really expect the latter ones on the island) and topped it off with the ‘5 stages of chocolate’. A cacao bomb indeed.
All truly recommended. However, if you’re not in the mood for food, the cocktails alone are worth a visit!
