Nestled in the Andean highlands of Peru is Colca Canyon, the second deepest canyon of the Americas. If you think that the Grand Canyon is impressive, you’ll for sure love the views on Colca Canyon, since it’s nearly twice as deep.
The canyon is a 6 to 8 hours drive north from Arequipa – depending on the traffic around the city – and increasing in popularity to hike around. Nonetheless, it’s still known for its tranquil pace, mainly due to the local farmers that continue to cultivate the famous Incan steeped terraces like their ancestors did.
Our two-day trekking in and around the Colca Canyon was one of the most beautiful hikes I’ve done in Latin America. Personally I thought it was even more pristine and gorgeous than the Salkantay trekking to Machu Picchu, because there were so few people in the canyon at the time of our visit (april 2018).
The landscape is very diverse, greener than I expected it to be and just keeps on changing with every bend you follow. Though some of the paths are very steep it’s all worth the effort. Fields of cacti, snow capped mountains in the backdrop, hot springs next to the river that runs amidst it all, an epic waterfall that suddenly springs from the rocks, stunning miradors, tiny villages, flowers all around, condors flying above your head, herds of llamas and alpacas; what’s not to like in here. In this canyon the journey really is the destination itself. Just look at the pictures and judge yourself!
Want to know more about the canyon? Stay tuned to see how you can hike the area yourself for a couple of days. Guides aren’t necessary along the way, but a thirst for adventure for sure is!
