“I cannot endure to waste anything so precious as autumnal sunshine by staying in the house.”
– Nathaniel Hawthorne, The American Notebooks, 1842”.
I was sticking around Buenos Aires for weeks and while being there, autumn wrapped itself around the streets. As I adore the deep colours of fall, I thought I’d just received the best present of all year.
Writing in the morning, it was lovely walking around the neighbourhoods of Palermo, Villa Crespo, Colegiales, Belgrano and Recoleta in the afternoons. At the same time, as a European, it was a rather remarkable idea to experience this season in May. But as Albert Camus said, “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” I guess it makes more sense seeing it like that.
Golden and red leaves laid scattered on the ground, mild weather, few rain showers and golden hour proved itself to be even more magical than before as the month went by.
The late afternoons were rather chilly, creating a perfect opportunity to add a chocolate caliente con churros to that 7 a’clock snack that the porteños adore. And those locros and guisos de lentejas tasted even better in the crispy cold of the night.
Here some snaps that may catch that autumny feeling in Buenos Aires!
